Things were getting really desperate in the camp and on November 12 when the storm stopped a small party tried to reach the summit on foot, but found it too difficult and returned that same evening.

Two more attempts were made over the next week but both failed. On November 21, 22 pioneers made an attempt and successfully reached the peak. The party traveled about 1. George's hand became infected and he became quite ill. With the freezing temperature and lack of rations, he quickly became incapacitated. He was unable to get firewood or hunt for food for his family. His brother, Jacob was frail and ineffectual. Tamsen was left to be the stalwart of this group.

With the most dramatic scenes yet to come, George drops out of the story. Although he no longer comes up in the story, except as needing care, George lingers until after the third rescue when Tamsen refuses to leave her husband to die alone.
